POD

On Thursday 3rd   March, we are celebrating World Book Day. World Book Day is celebrated all around the world and promotes a love and enjoyment of books and reading.

As part of our celebration of World Book Day we are holding a book fair in school where children will have the opportunity to buy books. This will also earn free books for the school! The book fair will be open for children to preview on the 3rd March, and then open for buying from 3pm. The book fair will also be open for grown ups to come and buy all day on 4th March in our Pod. Please join us at our book fair, books start from as little as £2.99. Children will also be able to redeem their World Book Day £1 voucher for books priced £2.99 and over. (To view some of the titles on offer, visit http://www.travellingbooks.co.uk/)

Also look out for the leaflet that will be sent home soon!

We all love stories in school, so on this day we would like you to make and wear a ‘story hat’ to school. This may be a hat that inspires story telling or a hat that reminds you of your favourite book – fiction of non-fiction. Let your imagination run wild!

‘Lovespoon Carving’

We have been very lucky to have a visit from Mr Watkins, a Lovespoon carver. The children have enjoyed learning about the craft of Lovespoon carving.

Thank you Mr Watkins!

Welcome to our new ‘POD’ page where you can find out all the latest news about our POD.

Below are some photographs of our new POD:

Welcome to our new POD

We have lift off!

This is what some of our year 5′s think about the POD:

‘I like the POD because I learn new things on the computers every time I’m there. I also like the POD for its comfortable bean bags, benches and the window seat. The POD is a very good place to learn new things. I really enjoy being in the POD!’

‘I think the POD is a good place because you can just chill on beanbags and sofas while you learn and work. It has lots of bright colours and a nice view of Victoria Gardens as well as silver laptops that are very jazzy and cool!’

‘I think the POD is brilliant because you can get lots of information and do whatever you want to do. There are so many computers so that you can bring in the whole class. It is very BIG!’

‘I think the POD is educational and it is nice for young people in key stage 1 and key stage 2. In the POD, people like looking at Victoria Gardens through the colourful windows.’

‘I think the POD is a brilliant place to learn because of the colours on the walls and the chairs. You can also see Victoria Gardens from the comfy window seat. It has loads of laptops and computers.’

‘I think the POD is a cool place to get information and have fun. There’s cushions every where to sit down on the floor and there are many different colours that make it funky. Our class loves to go to the POD and use the laptops.’

‘I think the POD is a cool place to chill because it has comfortable places to sit where you can look over Victoria Gardens and you can learn new things everyday.’

‘I think the POD is wonderful. It is a very fun place to learn and hang out. The POD has laptops and a very foamy window seat. The POD has many different colours that make it cool!!!’

On Friday, we celebrated the launch of our brand new state-of-the-art POD: a multifunctional learning space for all. We’ve been lucky enough to have a local artist, John Rees (illustrator of ‘Jasper’s Tale’ by Jessica Webb), create a colourful and unique wall mural which takes you on a visual journey through different historical Neath landmarks throughout the seasons.

You are then transported to a ‘Dr Who’ themed entrance to the POD, complete with a life-size tardis and our very own resident ‘Dr Who’! On the left-hand side of the POD you enter an area of digital learning, complete with laptops, PCs, an Apple Mac, mp3 voice recorders, Digital Blue microscopes/cameras, facilities for creating movies and digital artwork as well as a height adjustable interactive whiteboard.

On the right-hand side of the POD, there is a learning resource area with a twist. In addition to an extensive range of exciting fiction and non-fiction books, we have a magical story-telling area complete with hand-carved chair and storytelling accessories to stimulate every imagination. We also have a gaming station which has a Nintendo Wii, PS3, gaming chairs, guitar and drum kit, and a host of educational games on offer. Junior Librarian is a user-friendly library cataloguing system which will be used by our budding librarians of the future…

Don’t forget to keep checking our website for the latest news of the POD.  Next term we will be inviting local crafts persons to run workshops in our POD, both for the children and the community. All will be welcome.
